Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

Often unsettled across much of Europe, but particularly across more northern areas where it will be cold as well

New Year's Eve
Into New Year's Eve and it is low pressure will dominate the weather across most areas, but especially across many northern areas of Europe, including across much of the British Isles, down into France, Germany and up into much of Scandianvia where some significant snowfall is possible too across parts of Norway and Sweden. Best of the weather through the day will be across more southern areas of Europe where pressure will be higher, with mainly dry weather through the Med, particularly across Italy with some sunshine, but with perhaps some showery weather across Greece and surrounding countries.

New Year's Day
On New Year's Day and the unsettled weather will continue across much of Europe as low pressure dominates, with a number of low pressure systems in fact bringing widespread rain, strong winds and with wintry precipitation across northern areas. A spell of wet and very windy weather is possible across France through the day, perhaps with gales, while some significant snowfall is possible across the Alps and parts of Switzerland, as more unsettled weather also spills southwards into parts of the Med, with rain or showers arriving across Italy. Further wintry weather is expected across much of Scandinavia with further snow in Norway, Sweden and Finland in particular. Best of the weather through the day likely across far eastern areas of the Med where it will be mainly dry with some sunny spells in Greece and Turkey, for example.
